No need for a tropical holiday.

Last week I harvested my first ever crop of sweet potato.

I had always assumed that sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) would never grow in Melbourne as it is a tropical crop. The power of the internet however, persuaded me to give it a try.  I read a blog (can’t find it again so sorry I can’t credit with a link) where they had been successfully grown in Canada and I thought, ‘surely Mirador Farm is warmer than a country that snows!’. So I ordered some cuttings from this organic seed company in early September and now at the beginning of April my three cuttings have turned into a few kilos of purple skinned sweet potato. Very yummy roasted in oven and mashed.

The first ever Mirador Farm sweet potato.
